A log house for a stone house town area
Anna Sirén and Ilkka Haavisto’s modern, flat-roofed home finished in a white render, is full of surprises. It is only after you enter through the door that you realize you are at a log-built property The interesting wall solution is possible thanks to non-settling logs, a Honka innovation, that can be finished with this type of coat.
The Haavistos took their time when designing their home. They looked carefully into the Honka Fusion structure and were impressed. What they found was that the structure offers excellent energy efficiency and a high degree of damp resistance. In addition to a modern architectural look, the structure provided the optimal indoor humidity levels characteristic of log homes, which also offer proven health benefits.
As the plan for this plot specified a stone-built house, it didn’t occur to us that a log house might be a possibility at first. When we found out more about the Honka Fusion structure, we immediately saw the potential of contrasting stone and log surfaces.
The single-storey part of the Lumi property, which extends over a total of 161 m2, comprises a kitchen, dining and living area, hallway and toilet. The lower floor of the two-storey part contains the utility room, sauna and TV room, while the more tranquil upper floor has three bedrooms, one for the parents and for each of their daughters, aged 4 and 7.
It was a real pleasure working on the design with Honka. We were able to create almost exactly the same layout we had initially had in mind and at no point were we forced to compromise on our own vision.
Thanks to the non-settling structure, the house was capable of supporting large glass walls and windows that now bring the outdoors in. The single-storey section of the building was given a green roof. Viewed from the first floor, it blends in perfectly with the surrounding garden.
