PRESS RELEASE 2.10.2018
Public log buildings are becoming more common and log day care centres and schools are being built all around Finland. Pilke päiväkodit Oy (Pilke Day care Centres) opened last August 2018 three new log day care centres in Janakkala, Laukaa and Vantaa. In different parts of Finland there are now five log day care centres. The sixth one is opening in January 2019.
Modern log building is ideal for urban environments thanks to the non-settling log and the zero-corner solution. Pilke päiväkodit Oy opened log day care centre in August 2018 in the vicinity of Vantaa Myyrmäki apartment building suburb. Additionally, log day care centres were opened in Janakkala in Turenki and Laukaa in Kuhamäki.
There are three domestic operators, Pilke päiväkodit Oy, Honkarakenne Oyj and Mediset Hoivarakentajat Oy. Companies have agreed to construct a total of 34 log day care centres in different parts of Finland by the end of 2020.
As a result of this cooperation, five log day care centres have already been completed. In January 2019, the sixth one will be opened in Isokyrö when new premises will be built for the Pilke physical education day care centre. In addition to this, next year there will be at least four new log day care centres, as well as several other projects under way.
Log day care centres cater to the demand of local authorities to provide clean indoor day care facilities for children. In an ecological log day care centre, children can enjoy fresh indoor air, good acoustics, and a peaceful and quiet atmosphere of solid wood.
“Log is a natural surface material where the soothing scent fills up the space even after several years. The excellent indoor air quality of the day care centre is based on the fact that the log efficiently compensates for the variations in air humidity, and naturally aims to obtain indoor humidity at an optimal health level, Honkarakenne Project Sales Manager Markus Saarelainen explains.
The day care acoustics are done with non-allergenic fibreboard instead of woollen-based materials. The day care also features an intelligent ventilation system that continuously measures ambient air quality and adjusts room-specific airflow on a as needed basis. This saves energy and ensures high-quality indoor air.
In the customer feedback of the Pilke day care centre, the log building has received a lot of positive feedback. In particular, indoor air quality and acoustics received praise. When the day care centres are not so noisy, both children and adults feel better.
“We have no factual information about illnesses, but our employees report that they have less flu than in previous jobs, and the general feeling is that we get less ill than elsewhere,” says Liisa Arfman, the head of the Kurki, Pilke nature day care centre, in Aura.
