In Äkäslompolo, Villa Möhkölä blends into the wooded landscape on a hillside plot; a ten-person dream holiday home in Lapland for three families from Kokkola. A log cabin was everybody’s choice, due to previous experiences and the warmth and smell of timber. Breathing and relaxation are easy in the new log villa – the entrepreneur family has never found it so easy to turn off their laptops while on holiday. It all started with a perfect plot of land. Surrounded by tourists, their earlier log cabin in Ruka no longer felt comfortable, and the dream of a new log cabin in a quieter place seemed attractive. Ellinor’s parents found a hillside plot in Äkäslompolo, where the sun shines in the evening. Everything was perfect about it – the quiet location, orientation and elevation. Although building on a hillside has its challenges, the project proceeded apace. Ellinor’s training in construction came in handy, and is reflected in the log cabin’s interior. The atmospheric, dark interior helps you to relax, while the picture is completed by glazing bar windows that offer a view of the forest.

Honka logs the obvious choice
The previous Honka log cabin, which was built in the 1980s in Ruka, had served them well, and they wanted a new holiday home that was equally easy to maintain, and made of solid wood, because a log house is easy to breathe in. The couple already had a floor plan in mind, which was fine-tuned by Honkarakenne’s Rovaniemi representative, Jan Backman, in a matter of hours.
“We chose Honkarakenne based on our experiences, the price and the seller’s excellent customer service. It was easy to work with the Honka representative, and we are delighted with the result. He helped us to contact a local supervisor and good builders to take care of construction.”

Log house construction – remotely
The owners had previously been involved in construction projects, but with this log cabin everything seemed easier than before. Working on a hillside had its challenges, but laying the logs went swiftly. The challenges in the early stages were minor and resolved in just a few days. The house was eventually completed in seven months.
“We lived during the weekdays in Kokkola, but construction in Lapland went so well that this didn’t matter, thanks to the supervisor and motivated local builders. We drove up once a month to check how things were going.”

Ellinor recalls that the electrical plans took a surprisingly long time to develop. The family wanted to be sure that the sockets would be sufficient in number and installed in the intermediate walls, to leave the log walls as unaltered as possible.
Calming effect of a harmonious interior
For everyone, the key issue in the project was the creation of a practical and comfortable log cabin. All 10 people can fit into the spacious living area at the same time and there is a compact sleeping area for all. There are times when Ellinore thinks that the cabin became too comfortable, because she is occasionally reluctant to go outdoors.
“When I sit on the living-room sofa gazing into the fire, my mind is at ease. The best thing about the house is the fact that, thanks to its large windows, the living room feels as if it continues into the forest. And it really surprised me how easy it is to breathe here – the difference with our prefabricated home in Kokkola is clear.”

The nest-like atmosphere of the interior is created by a beautiful world of broken colours and interesting surface material choices. The cabin is conducive to peace of mind.
