If, at the end of a large construction project, you can say that you would not do anything differently, both the project and the home have been exceptionally successful. That is exactly the case with the story of Salla and Marko’s Honka Frame Lauha.
In the Porvoo archipelago, on the land of an age-old fishing village, stands a magnificent Honka Frame Lauha house and its ancillary buildings. It is home to Salla, Marko and their dogs. In addition to the main building, the complex includes an outbuilding containing a gym, a dog kennel and a carport as well as a lakeside sauna with a guest room by Honka. The property also has a summer kitchen refurbished from an old boathouse, a garage, and a yard building awaiting renovation.

Smooth construction process for a modern wooden house
The couple wanted only wooden buildings for their seaside plot, because that is what has always been there. The Honka Frame Lauha model impressed them at first sight, both in terms of its architectural language and its floor plan. When they also hit it off with the Honka representative Esa Niittymäki and designer Jari Toivonen, the choice was clear.
Salla and Marko are full of praise for their Honka representative. Communication between him, the contractor and the couple was perfect.
– “Esa took really good care of the project. Not a week went by without him calling to make sure that everything was going well,” Marko recalls.
The couple commends Honka as well. Everything proceeded on schedule and exactly as agreed; for example, when the inner panels ordered for the terrace turned out to be the wrong shade, the issue was corrected immediately.
– “Everything was handled very elegantly. I can’t think of anything I would do differently, even in hindsight,” Salla says.
– “We say eye to eye on everything,” Marko continues.

Impressive architecture of the Honka Frame pillar beam wooden house
The load-bearing frame of the Scandinavian-style Honka Frame Lauha pillar beam house is made of solid wood pillars and beams joined together using traditional wooden joints. The technology allows for, among other things, a beautifully streamlined glass facade. The maximum six meter room height gives the interior a spacious feel.
The couple wanted the space consisting of the living room and the open-plan kitchen to be even roomier than usual, so the floor plan was modified to also merge the fireplace room with this space. The windows in the sauna and bathroom were also made larger. No other changes were needed.
Nature comes in through the landscape windows
The facade of Salla and Marko’s home, which opens to the sea, means that they can observe nature coming to life in the spring, herons, swans and white-tailed eagles moving around the bay in the summer, the magnificent colours of autumn and the blue moments of winter. Even autumn gales and snowstorms are welcome when seen through the windows and sitting by the fireplace.
– “The seasons and weather conditions are accentuated on the island, for better or for worse. Nature is within hand’s reach. The dark is pitch black, the silence is total and the cold is freezing. Before moving to the island, I had never really seen winter,” Salla laughs.
– “The winter conditions by the sea were a surprise, but it is always suitably warm or cool inside, as the geothermal heating and cooling system has more than sufficient capacity. The tinted and sun protected windows also help to prevent the interior from getting hot, even in summer,” Marko continues.
The home is an energy efficiency class A house and part of the required electricity is produced by solar panels installed on the roof.

Meeting place for a group of friends
Marko and Salla’s friends often visit the island. The place is designed so that even a large group can spend time and stay overnight with the couple.
Marko and Salla have been travelling around the world for years, but now they don’t feel like leaving the island.
– “The most wonderful thing is to sit at home by the fireplace with a cup of coffee and look out to the sea. It makes me sigh every time,” Salla says.
– “Both of our favourite places come with a view: in front of the fireplace, on the terrace and in the sauna,” Marko adds.
