Unique Honka Holiday Home – Gem of the Isles

After years of dreaming of a holiday home for their family, Elisa and Toni from Paimio in Southwest Finland found the perfect plot of land in Kimitoön. The island offers the best of the archipelago nature. A log villa was designed on the plot’s sturdy rock, with floor-to-ceiling glass walls facing the sea.

Elisa and Toni spent a couple of years looking for a plot to build a holiday home on in Southwest Finland. Their perseverance was finally rewarded when they happened to call the estate agent at the right time and got to know plots that had just come up for sale in Kimitoön. Elisa and Toni immediately fell in love with the rocky shore they saw and sealed the deal before the plot was put up for public sale.

The one and a half hectare seaside plot located in the municipality of Kimitoön, less than an hour’s drive from the family’s home. Their beautiful villa was completed in early spring last year, and the couple now enjoy their free time with their children Mikaela and Leo Surrounded by beautiful nature, peace and quiet.

Perfect holiday home with an exceptional sea view

The family wanted a three-bedroom log house on the plot, with a perfect view of the sea from the interior. In practice, this meant a continuous floor-to-ceiling glass surface on the wall facing the shore. No bars or grilles of any kind were accepted to disturb the view.

Quotes were requested from several log home manufacturers. Only a few of them were able to meet the technical requirement for windows. The family chose Honkarakenne, whose offer included a Honka Landscape Plus windows with vertical pillars as the load-bearing frame of the wall.

Construction was started in 2023. The builders were found nearby, with Byggnadsfirma B-G Holmström Ab from Dalsbruk old industrial area taking care of much of the construction work, which proceeded at a brisk pace according to plan.

The house was built entirely on top of the rock. A pillar foundation was built under the log frame. The villa is now ready, except for a few finishing touches. The foundation pillars are still waiting for wooden slat fencing to give privacy.

The lines and floor plan of the house were created with Elisa and Toni’s preliminary design, which was refined together with Honka Designer, Marko Lehtonen. The villa has 112 square metres of living space. There was no need for a sauna in the main building, as a separate sauna was built close to the shore.

The villa is a stylish building in itself, but what makes it a real gem of the archipelago is the elegance of the interior, which can be described as perfect. Styling is a hobby Elisa enjoys, and she really gets the job done. The end result looks like the work of a top professional, even though interior design is just a hobby for Elisa.

BLACK CEILING. The master bedroom is located at the end of the house. Like the living room, it has a continuous glass wall rising from the floor to the ceiling. The maximum room height is 3.5 metres. The interior ceiling was boldly chosen to be black. It was made with five Lunawood panel types of different widths. The impressive coating of the fireplace was made by Decorpoint Oy. 

 The whole is complete without a single decorative item. The colour scheme and furniture are harmonious despite the bold colours. The black ceiling, intense blue utility room furniture, peony-coloured bedroom cabinets and a lemon yellow sofa are out of the ordinary and look particularly great because of this. A round solid oak table was custom-made next to the kitchen. The same carpenter also built bar countertops to the kitchen island, where the family now enjoys breakfast sitting on the expressive Bouchen bar stools.

The interior is a mix of modern clarity and traditional elements. The living area has a massive fireplace and the bedrooms have beautifully draping curtains. Motorised roller blinds were installed in the living room glass wall. A massive enclosure was built on top of the Tiileri fireplace and covered with a unique mortar surface designed Pia Haloila from Decorpoint Oy. Equally decorative is the toilet, where Elisa added a charming shine by dab painting the black wall. The finishing touch was put with a mirror cut in the shape of an arch.

STARTLING WET ROOMS. A separate seaside sauna was built on the plot, so there was no need for a sauna inside the villa. Next to the blue utility room is a glass-walled space for two showers. The decorative features are crowned by a brass basin and a spectacular Honey Gold tap.

ROUND WINDOWS AS EXITS. All three bedrooms have a round window, which serves as an emergency exit required by building codes.

Beautiful details

The couple wanted a black ceiling in the villa, even at the risk of darkening the interior. However, the interior remained light, as the room height is up to 3.5 metres and there is plenty of natural light coming in through the floor-to-ceiling windows. The ceiling was made with Lunawood panels of different widths, and Elisa and Toni planned their arrangement carefully in advance.

The kitchen was created in collaboration with Charmia. The basic colour is dark grey, complemented by light-coloured birch veneer doors in the upper cupboards above the worktop. The kitchen island is covered with Dekton’s impressive ceramic worktop. Wall cabinets extend from floor to ceiling.

The entrance hall is bright and offers an clear view of the sea through the floor-to-ceiling glass wall of the living room.
